The Great Depression caused famine and poverty throughout England in the 1930's and Leeds was no exception. During a time where jobs were at an all time low, the Town Hall didn't have enough offices and so £360,000 was spent on building the Civic Hall which equates to around £17,000,000 in todays money. This could have been used to help starving children or infrastructure and so my work represents the disparity of the people. The work that resulted in the construction of the golden clock was paid with housing and food instead of money which shows how desperate the people were.
